The Instruments and Devices

¡¡¡¡¡¡Occupying 700 square
meters, the R&D Department consists of several modern
laboratories, which was equipped with advanced analytical instruments
and processing
devices. The major analytical instruments include:

Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS, Agillent
4500, 7500A), which
could be applied to the analysis of a variety of samples with
low detection limits down
to the ppb or ppt level. The advantages of ICP-MS include analytical
speed, reliability,
isotopic analysis in addition to sensitivity.
¡ï
Atomic Fluorescent Spectrometry (AF-610A), which is very sensitive
for some heavy metal
determinations such as Pb, Cd, Hg, and As. The instrument is often
advantageous for the
determination of heavy metals in Chinese medicinal materials and
food samples.
¡ï
Gas Chromatography and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC
and GC-MS, Agilent
6890). These two instruments are both equipped with on-line sample
pre-
treatment/introduction devices and multiple detectors. They are
powerful techniques for
the determination of trace volatile or semi-volatile organic compounds.
The instruments
are ideally suited for the determination of trace contaminants
including PAHs, PCBs, and
pesticide residues in Chinese medicinal materials and food products.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with UV and fluorescent
detectors, and
HPLC-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS, Agilent 1100). These instruments
are used for the
determination of organic, bioactive components in TCMs; and the
fingerprinting analyses
of herbal medicines for standardization and QA/QC.
